We do three things:
1. We act locally, within Bovey Tracey and Heathfield and the surrounding area, to reduce carbon emissions. For example, we have a very successful community garden, which helps people grow local food, rather than needing to buy food which has been transported here from far away, often incurring high food miles.
We also very proud of our woodfuel group, who meet regularly throughout the winter to fell and process wood from Dartmoor National Park's woodlands. The members take the wood home to use in wood-burning stoves, which reduce their need to use fossil fuels for heating.
2. We hold events to let people know what climate change is doing to our planet, and how it will affect our futures. Often, the information is scary - such as the recent record thawing of the Arctic ice (check this link for details). We always look for suggestions about what can be done, though, so that the future is better for ourselves and our children.
3. We lobby nationally (including our MP), and locally to increase the work that public authorities do to make a difference. We can't solve all the problems locally - for example, to reduce the carbon emissions from cars and lorries, which create about a third of Devon's emissions, we need to change the transport infrastructure. We are members of county-wide and national organisations such as the Low Carbon Communities Network (which we helped to set up) which work on these issues. Our members also subscribe to Avaaz and other petitions which address climate change issues.
