The News Stand....November 2008

A capacity crowd gathered in Bovey Tracey parish church on Monday 10th November to mark the second birthday of Bovey Climate Action.  The group was joined by special guests Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project, and Rosie Boycott, ex editor of the Independent, and now chair of London Food. The event was also attended by the Bovey Tracey town mayor, representatives from Teignbridge District Council, DNPA, National Trust and local businesses.

Rosie Boycott
Rosie Boycott: "Every town has space that can be turned into a community garden."

Highlights of BCA's year include:
  • The WasteWatcher project has led to a 23% reduction in carbon emissions from heating, lighting and powering appliances in the homes we worked with
  • The group has reached agreement with the National Trust to create a community fruit and vegetable garden at Parke on the edge of the town
  • A community car club will begin in Bovey shortly operated by Moorcar, who already operate cars in Ashburton and Chagford.
  • The group has worked with the Town Mayor to turn Bovey Tracey into a plastic bag free zone
In the coming year, the group will focus on lobbying government and business for change with the launch of a 350 campaign.

Cathy King, chair of BCA said afterwards, "Climate change has now gone mainstream.  It is heartening to see what Bovey Climate Action started has now been embraced by the whole community. We are taking the lead in reducing carbon in our community with a lot of simple things that make a big difference."
