BCA Members go on epic journey overland to Australia

Babs Hadrill took BCA members on an epic journey overland to Australia and back at a talk in the Phoenix Hall on Tuesday 7th April. When Babs received an invitation to be a bridesmaid at her best friend's wedding in Oz, she faced a big dilemma.  Should she accept or not, given that she had given up flying for environmental reasons?

Babs is doing a cycle tour of Devon to promote her book Babs2Brisbane  which relates her adventures during the overland trip she made there and back.  Go to
www.babs2brisbane.com and see what she got up to!

Bovey Tracey was her first stop on the tour.   She composed this poem to celebrate her stay in the town.

At every new junction
The sign says Chudleigh
It is desparately luring me in.
But today I am heading to Bovey
And consult the map again.

The red clay of the earth
Reminds me of where I am.
The sight of new spring growth
Garlic, Dog’s Mercury and Celandine
Send me back home again.

Descending fast
Down the steepest hill in the world
I arrive to a welcome, warm
And  stash my bike for a couple of days
Then head out to explore.

Everyone knows everyone here
In a way that is close to my heart.
As I make new friends in the library and deli
Before trying to appreciate some art.

The Devon Guild is a delightful place.
And I learnt about local clay quarries.
The House of Marbles was a fun way to see
This ancient craft upheld.

After spotting some Dartmoor Ponies
And a clotted cream tea
My adventures in Devon are set.
Bovey Tracey thanks for having me!
