A growing initiative - Bovey Tracey Primary School joins Garden Share Scheme

Bovey Tracey Primary School has become the first to benefit from a new Garden Share Project run by Bovey Climate Action, a local community climate change action group.

The Garden Share scheme has successfully connected the owner of a large garden with the school’s new gardening club.  The garden’s elderly owner has agreed that the children can use it to grow fruit and vegetables with the help of several enthusiastic teachers and parents. The produce will then be prepared by the school’s cooking club and offered to the children.  Not only will the children learn first-hand about growing their own food, they will also get healthy exercise and help an elderly lady to cultivate a garden that is too large for her to maintain.  In return, she will share in some of the produce and enjoy the company of the lively young visitors.

Becky Forest, Deputy Head of the Bovey Tracey Primary said: “This initiative came about through a link made between our Eco-schools Award and the Bovey Climate Action Garden Share Scheme and both children, staff and parents are all looking forward to getting ‘stuck-in’ as soon as possible.”

The Garden Share Scheme is looking to more garden owners who would like some help with tending their gardens, with keen growers who would like a piece of land to grow their own food.  In addition to the school garden share, the project has already paired up another two smaller gardens and more are in the pipeline.  Anyone interested in joining the scheme should contact Bovey Climate Action on 01626 835311.
